PECO – Pennsylvania’s Largest Electric and Natural Gas Utility

With a history dating back more than 140 years, PECO is one of the oldest utility companies in the country. It serves 1.6 million electric and 515,000 natural gas customers in the Philadelphia region, as well as parts of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, York and Lancaster counties.

As the largest electric company in Pennsylvania, PECO is committed to providing safe and reliable energy service throughout its territory. It values staying competitive in the deregulated market and working to improve electric reliability year after year.

Deregulation

Since January 2011, deregulation has been underway in Pennsylvania and millions of consumers have gotten the chance to shop for an electricity supply from a competitive supplier. This has created a more vibrant energy market and many consumers have been able to save on their electric bills.

Consumers should consider switching suppliers for cost savings, excellent customer service and the opportunity to receive a reliable power supply. Businesses should also benefit, especially those with large industrial power needs.

One of the biggest challenges for deregulation is to ensure that companies can get a fair deal from their utility supplier. In the case of PECO, critics allege that the company’s stranded costs were incorrectly reflected on its books of account.

Choosing an Energy Supplier

Pennsylvania residents have a choice when it comes to their electricity supplier. The state’s deregulated energy market allows consumers to choose their own electricity supply company.

This can mean lower PA electric rates for those who shop around. The first step is to determine who is responsible for delivering electricity to your home or business.

Then, consider what you’re paying right now for the energy you use. This can help you decide if it makes sense to switch suppliers.

Aside from PECO, there are other utility companies in your area that provide electricity and natural gas. Some of these companies may also offer alternative energy options, such as renewable power sources.

Fixed-Rate Pricing

PECO customers can lock in a fixed rate for six months, a year or longer. This helps to protect their budgets from rising prices and makes it easier for them to plan their electricity usage.

When PECO serves customers, it acts as a wholesale energy supplier, buying electricity and natural gas from generators at the lowest cost and passing that savings on to customers. However, PECO does not make a profit on this supply.

The amount of the cost of that supply is called the supply charge and is shown on your electric bill under “Electric Supply.” It can also be compared to Peco’s default rate, or price to compare, which is listed in the message center on page two of your monthly bill.

Mobile App

PECO’s mobile app offers a variety of services that can help you save money on your energy bills. It also helps you keep track of your account information and avoid power shutoff scams.

Exelon Corporation’s PECO subsidiary provides electric and natural gas services (NYSE: EXC). Based in Philadelphia, it serves 1.6 million customers.

As a member of the Exelon family of utilities, PECO is committed to honoring the hard work of its employees. Its sister companies, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power and Pepco, also recognize the efforts of their employees.
